Many of these seem to be placed/used in order to convey a typically angry attitude in reflection of the general feel of Metal music. There also appears to be a heavy use of make up on the people appearing on certain issues of the magazines. It is usually specific/unique to the artist(s), however it also aids the attitude the image gives off.
